LS polls: Political clans running the rule in western UP

Representational Picture
All the political parties except BJP are banking on these political clans for success in the general elections. The members of these families don’t have to run around the political parties to get tickets to contest elections.

The influential Akhtar Hasan family has been deciding the destiny of Kairana constituency in western UP. Akhtar Hasan was a parliamentarian from Congress party and his son Munawwar Hasan was a Rajya Sabha member.

Munawwar was elected to the Vidhan Sabha on Samajwadi Party (SP) ticket. Later he reached the Lok Sabha as Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate.

After Munawwar’s death in 2008, his wife Tabassum Begum successfully contested the Kairana Lok Sabha seat in 2009. Now Munawwar’s son Nahid is contesting elections on SP ticket. This time, the BSP fielded her brother-in-law from Kairana.

BSP MP from Muzaffarnagar Kadir Rana is another influential family in the western UP. Before entering Lok Sabha, Rana has been RLD MLA and SP MLC.

Rana’s brother Noor Salim is a BSP legislator from Charthawal in western UP. Noor Salim had also contested Lok Sabha elections on RLD ticket from Bijnor in the past. This time around he is pitted against RLD candidate Jaya Prada from Bijnor on SP ticket.

Rashid Masood family of Saharanpur also enjoys similar political stature in this sensitive region of western UP. Saharanpur is witnessing an interesting political battle this time as Masood’s son Shajan and nephew Imran are pitted against one another on SP and Congress ticket respectively.

Imran landed in controversy recently for allegedly threatening to kill BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. Imran won as an Independent candidate in last Assembly polls in Muzaffarnagar.

All these political families are once again expected to play a major role in the upcoming elections and no party kept their kin an arm’s length from political landscape despite making tall claims against dynastic politics.
